In August of that year the Northern Ireland civil rights movement began public marches in support of its objectives causing community tensions between Catholics and Protestants. On 4 December 1968 violence broke out between loyalists and civil rights campaigners following one such march in Dungannon. During this outbreak of violence Hassard was attacked and death-threats were sent to his home, leading him to resign. In this interview he discusses the escalation of conflict in Northern Ireland. |
